Racing Days

Written: 2003
Released: 2003 on 'Fame'
Notes: I've worked part-time in betting shops
for many years - this is the result.

Through grey November afternoons
Through April rains and flaming Junes
They come to wager wages
Or just waste a little time
They pick their pockets to the seams
To bet on spindle brindle dreams
That come out of the traps get bumped
At the first and never make it back

But these are racing days
You place your money where you choose
You learn to walk away with 'some you win'...

There's Danny the Face and Perfume John
Big Del and Paul he still owes a ton
Ginger and Gerry the Junk
Still telling stories about his cab
Faces come and faces go
Here one minute then before you know
Heather died Ray moved away
Little Tone got seven months
But these are racing days
You place your money where you choose
You learn to walk away with 'some you win'...

Nicola Jane's in a bit of a spot
Will she keep the baby or will she not
She'd better make her mind up soon
He's already nearly three
And Alex has got bruises on her face
She says he says he won't do it again
And well even if she changed the locks
He'd just break his way back in

But these are racing days
You place your money where you choose
You learn to walk away with 'some you win'...

Now we lay staring at the clouds
We give them eyes we give them mouths
We watch them as they fall apart
Under vast bridges of the sun
I lean across this open space
I kiss your nose and stroke your face
Then lie back and wonder where the hell
We'll be this time next year
But these are racing days
You place your money where you choose
You learn to walk away with 'some you win
And some you lose'

I have seen all kinds of everything
Just looking in your eyes
I have been all kinds of everywhere
Just lying by your side
And the days carry on
And we'll say want you want
We'll walk where we choose
We might never win
But we've got nothing to lose

I have seen all kinds of everything
Just looking in your big brown eyes
I have been all kinds of everywhere
Just lying by your side
And these are racing days
These are racing days
Racing days
